About Us

The following is a short timeline of our organization’s history.

  • 1978: A group of UNH students bought a house to use as a prayer area.

  • Late 80s: More students and some local Muslims started praying at the house in congregation.

  • 1990: The Masjid was remodeled & enlarged to meet the needs of the Muslims.

  • Mid/Late 90s: The West Haven community was formally acknowledged and established.

  • 2000-Present: The community has grown tremendously.

Throughout the years, as the community grew, and our organization strived to meet their needs. Please visit the “Services” tab in our website for a list of activities that we offer.

The one issue that we could not overcome is that of space and parking. We worked hard to remodel our center to accommodate more people for the Friday Sermon (khutba) and we were successful is accommodating up to 400 people. However, our attendance keeps on increasing which raises the same challenge again.

Ever since the early 90s, the University of New Haven, UNH, kindly allowed us to use their parking lots to accommodate people. Recently, the UNH issued a letter informing us that they will revoke all of our parking privileges by the end of August 2006. This raises the parking issue as our parking lot can only hold a maximum of 30 cars.

We are working around the clock to find new place to move to and to resolve this issue. Please look at the “New Masjid” tab for more information about this project.
